Do you live to run? Do you plan your day around your running? Do you try to get everyone you know to start running?
If you answered yes to any of these, you may have the runs. If you answered yes to ALL of them, you definitely do!

Race Recap: 2010 Detroit Turkey Trot

The Turkey Trot 10k race was more about having fun with my friends (Julie, Sherry, Mike) than pushing me to my limits or setting any speed records. That is why I allowed myself to be talked into wearing a tutu for the race.

The morning didn’t start off all that fun however. Waking up at 4:30 on a day off is challenging enough, but when I saw the rain shower drenching everything outside, my spirit sagged a little. “Oh well,” I said to myself. “We are going to get wet.” So I ate my oatmeal, drank my chocolate milk, put on my costume. Looking in the mirror, my opinion of the rain was changing slightly. “Maybe it would keep the spectators away so that only a few people will see me in this get up.”

Mike, however, seemed to enjoy wearing his costume, maybe a little too much.

I will admit though, it looked pretty good on the girls.

The four of us met up, piled in one car and drove to Detroit. Julie was smart enough to print off a map for us to find the best parking spot. After thoroughly confusing me by giving 30% coupon instead of a map, we eventually got things figured out and I decided that the Cobo garage would be the best place to park because of the rain. This would turn out to be a HORRIBLE decision, but more on that later.

We eventually get to Detroit and after picking up our race numbers we head to the costume contest. The contest ended up being a big sham. The team costume winners were a group of people wearing cow costumes. As wise woman once asked “What the hell does a cow have to do with Thanksgiving or Christmas!”

Bitter about the rigged contest, it wasn’t until we were at the starting line, five minutes before the race started when we realized that the rain had stopped. It looked like we were at least going to stay dry today.

The race itself was fairly uneventful. The girls got some cat calls, I got some humorous comments about my tutu. Mike got some cat calls (hey, he made it look good). And we all eventually crossed the finish line, some faster than others.

Sherry: 55 minutes, 52 seconds
Julie: 58 minutes, 21 seconds
Mike: 1 hour, 2 minutes, 10 seconds
Scott: 1 hour, 2 minutes, 20 seconds

After the race we headed to find the free food. After going in two circles, and several flights of stairs, we found the food, but the line was way to long for us so we decided that we’d just pick something up on the way home. We headed back to the car, pulled out of our spot then stopped in our tracks along with the dozens of cars in front of us.

I hopped out of the car to find out what the hold was, that was when I discovered that the garage exits right on to the same road the race was being run on. “SON OF A …” we were not going be able to leave the garage until the last runner crossed the finish line. Which ending up being over 30 minutes after we got in the car.

15 minutes into the wait, Julie and I decided to head back into Cobo to stand it the same line that was too long for us just 15 minutes ago, to grab some food for the group. After loading our Santa hats with bananas, pretzels, bagels, and water, we headed back to the car just in time. The race had finally ended.

Although most of the adventure happened before the start or after the end of this race, it was still a good time with a great group of runners.
